Mona Vale Mobile Blood Donor Centre is back from 24 to 27 February 2024

Did you know:

  • your donations can play a vital role in the fight against cancer? Cancer patients are the biggest recipients of blood and blood products in Australia.
  • one blood donation can save up to three lives? Just think about how many lives you could change by coming back for more.
  • red blood cells only last 42 days from when they’re donated? Australia needs over 1.7 million donations every year to meet demand: that’s three every minute.

Can You Give Blood?

You should be able to give blood if you:

  • Are aged 18-76
  • Weigh more than 50kg
  • Feel healthy and well

I am an elite athlete. Can I donate?

  • The Red Cross doesn’t recommend giving blood during a competitive period or season. It could have a minor, temporary impact on performance — it’s common to feel a bit tired after donating. Consider donating during your off-season or if you’re taking a break from competition.
  • Also, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) has strict guidelines about recording every blood donation and donating plasma or platelets may even breach their regulations.
  • Double-check with your sport’s governing body, the ASADA website or the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) website. The Red Cross loves your dedication to saving lives, but they don’t want to get you in trouble!

How long does it take?

Allow about an hour for the donation, including the pre-donation interview and time for snacks afterwards. Giving blood itself takes about 5-10 minutes.
