2022 Basin Youth Camp Wrap

By Rebecca Capell

After two years of no camps due to covid, it was exciting to see the 2022 kick off with our youth camp held at The Basin on the 10th and 11th of September. It definitely felt like summer was on the way with beautiful blue skies and the sun out all weekend.

The surf club hosted 34 youth and their parents for the weekend where the aim was to start the learning process for those doing their SRC this season and to refresh the skills of those looking at doing their Bronze medallion this coming season. It is also an opportunity to engage and for our youth to make new friends across what would normally be different age groups on the beach. This year we also introduced the dolphins and Marlins to the camp, this was a delightful addition to the weekend where great mentoring between our youth and Marlins was visible.

Highlights would have been the opportunity to have a ride in the IRB at race pace and the jet skis. This is something that cannot be offered at the beach in the surf so holding our camps at the basin is the perfect opportunity to expose our youth to different opportunities that the club has to offer.

Thank you to Harris Farm who supplied all the fresh fruit and vegetables for the weekend. Harris Farm is a valuable sponsor to our club and their contribution to the weekend was much appreciated.

This weekend would not happen without the support crew, a big thank you goes to the following people:

  • Brendan Capell, Alan Carroll, Nick Rogers and Ian Crutch for working on the logistics of the weekend.
  • Special mention to Alan and Brendan for doing all the catering.
  • Jess Menzies, Brendan Menzies, Lauren Budd, Brendan Capell, Emma Carroll and Luci Bently for the CPR, radio and first aid training.
  • Guyren Smith, Matt Edwards, Melisse Cooper, Harry Capell, Liam Taurins, Jeremy Paul and Karen Burns for providing IRBs, jet skis, and personal craft to assist with the deployment of the WAC.
