While the stars of beach and water were strutting their stuff at Newport, our surfboat crews were having their first competition around the corner at Bilgola. As at Newport, the constantly changing wind made for occasionally challenging conditions.
All crews showed the benefit of a solid off-season, with our new look open men’s crew, the Hellfish, swept by the returned prodigal, Josh Hayward finishing a strong 4th in the final. Rob Emerson’s B crew, the Sea Cucumbers, also having a good day, pulling back to 4th after a shocking start in their final.
Our new U19s, the Vipers, have sweep and coach Jay Borthwick very excited about this season after finishing third in the final behind two of last season’s Aussie finalists.
The 23 boys (Bottom Feeders) and the newly formed 23 girls crew (Pistol Shrimp) rowed consistently in their races to both finish second overall.
We’re all looking forward to a good season and to turning it on at Newport boat carnival in two weeks. Saturday, November 19th, starting at 0800, be there and support your boat crews.
