New Honor Board Unveiling on 13 November 2022

  • In case you missed it, we unveiled a new Honor Board on Sunday afternoon, 13 November.
  • In his speech, our President, Guyren Smith, welcomed everyone and:
    • Mentioned Newport SLSC’s long and proud tradition of service to the country as evidenced by the existing three boards recognising our members’ service in WW1, WW2 and Vietnam.
    • Announced our new board recognises four members who have served in war or “warlike” operations since 1975.
      • Michael Maley, CSC, DSM
      • Justin Downey-Price
      • Matt Stevens, DSC, CSC
      • Nick Hogan
    • [Unfortunately, Justin and Nick were unable to attend. However, they have both thanked the club for the honour and recognition].
    • Thanked Michael King (Life Member), Matt Stevens and John McInerney (Life Member) for their work and research to organise the board and the Avalon RSL subbranch for contributing to the cost of the board.
    • Summarised the eligibility criteria:
      • Needs to be a full Member of the Newport SLSC at the time of enlistment or deployment; and
      • Have served in a war/operational zone recognised by the Federal Govt by the appropriate medal.
    • Guyren then introduced Gary McKay (author, historian and former member) to unveil Honour Board.
  • Our ceremony concluded with Gary ringing the bell in the bar and everyone toasting to “those who have served”.
  • Thank you to everyone who attended including Pittwater Ward Councillors Rory Amon & Michael Gencher, Rob Stokes (Member for Pittwater) and Sophie Scamps (Member for Mackellar).
Fun Fact

Michael King built the board out of recycled Australian cedar and Kauri pine, some of the timber retrieved from old surfboats. Michael decided to stick with Amercian spelling of “honor” to be consistent with the other three boards.
