For the well-being of sensitive skin | Eau Thermale Avène (avene.com.au)
We are proud to announce that the club has a new sponsorship from Avene, and we are now stocking their products at our shop with a significant discount. The spray bottle is $26.30 (usually $36), and the lotion is $23.00 (usually $32.00). This is a must for all patrolling members and a great stocking filler with Christmas only days away.
Did you know that skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia? Unfortunately, Australia has one of the world’s highest rates of skin cancer. The majority of skin cancer is caused by overexposure to the sun, and given that we all spend time on the beach, especially those patrolling, we need to be more vigilant than most. Even on cloudy days, our UV can be very high. A rating of 3 or more on the UV index is dangerous and can lead to skin and eye damage.
By following the 6 S’s, you can protect yourself:
- Slip-on Shirt
- Slop on suncream
- Slap on a hat
- Slide on sunnies
- Seek shelter
- Study the UV index
Studies show that we need to apply sun cream 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours. Given that we are in the water on patrol, our cream should be at a minimum of 30 plus, preferably 50 plus. We should also get our eyes and skin checked annually or more often if recommended by your GP.
7 warning signs of skin cancer:
- Changes in the appearance of the mole
- Skin changes after the mole has been removed
- Itchiness and oozing
- A sore spot that won’t go away
- Scaly patches on the skin
- Vision problems
- Changes in fingernails and toenails
