Newport caps off the IRB Premiership final round

The weekend saw the IRB team head to Caves Beach to contest the 4th and final round of the State Premiership. With a few injuries from activities outside of IRB racing and university exams in full swing the somewhat depleted team still put on a strong showing with all team members doing a great job of filling in for the missing team members.

For the fourth round, we finally escaped the dreaded shore breaks that have been hounding us this season and had a great weekend of racing with enough of a wave to make it challenging. Although the start format had to be changed during the day as a sandbank came and went with the tide.

Newport continued to show strength in the tube races with the 35+, 45+ and Under 23 teams getting to the finals, with the 45+ team picking up 3rd. Our female crews continued to show their form picking up 4th in the Teams race and 8th in the Mass rescue. Also showing ongoing strength was our U23 crews with finals in Teams, Tube and Mass Rescue.

Newport finished 11th on the round 4 point score which meant that we ended up a creditable 12th on the premiership point score. On the premiership point score some results to note were, 45+ Tube 4th place, 35+ Tube 6th Place, Open Tube 10th, Under 23 Tube 5th, Open Female Teams equal 7th, U23 teams 9th, U23 Mass 6th.

The team is now busy preparing for the State championships at Cape Hawke in 2 weeks.
