Newport Makes the List! NSW 2020 Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence  

This year’s list has been released with Newport nominated in 4 categories in SLSNSW’s Awards of Excellence. The awards honour members who make a difference in their local organisation by working on initiatives that benefit the membership or use their skills to represent their club in competition.   

This year’s awards will be presented at the SLSNSW Awards of Excellence function on Saturday 29th August 2020 from 6:30pm. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Awards will be held online and streamed LIVE on the SLSNSW Facebook page or YouTube channel.

Nominations as follows:

Patrol of the Year

The Patrol of the Year has demonstrated an exemplary standard of behaviour and attitude as well as excellence in the delivery of service to the community.

Newport’s nomination went to the Newport Bronze Patrol, an initiative devised by Guyren Smith and Jess Menzies. This initiative allowed new Bronze members the opportunity to patrol together under the supervision of trainers before joining their assigned patrol.

Youth Athlete of the Year

The Youth Athlete of the Year is an athlete aged between 15-18 who has achieved sporting excellence in Youth and/or Open Aged Competition.

Newport’s nomination goes to Jake Morris.

Surf Sports Team of the Year

The Surf Sports Team of the Year is an exemplary Surf Sports Team that has achieved notable success. 

This year’s Newport nomination goes to the U15 Male Water Team.  At NSW Championships in February the team dominated, finishing 1-4 in every water event.  Mitch Morris, Jake Morris, Bailey Clues and Lee Melbourn went on to win the Board Relay, Surf Teams, Cameron Relay and finished 2nd in the Beach Relay.

Innovation Award

The Innovation Award is a well-researched concept, piece of equipment, program or event which is/has been implemented to improve any facet of Surf Life Saving.

This year’s Newport nomination goes to the Soldier On initiative. Soldier On is a support organisation that assists returning veterans to connect with their community through learning opportunities, and participation activities. Newport worked with the organisation by inviting veterans to complete their Bronze Medallion training from beach patrols, to rescue services and safety education.
