Newport Surf Club – Proposed Constitution and Regulations

Hi All,

A Sub Committee has been updating our Constitution to align it with the NSW template. We have received feedback from the Committee, our Legal Officer, Life Members, and the Honours Committee. It is now time to gather input from general members before seeking review from our Branch and State organisations.

Please find the proposed versions of the Constitution and Regulations.

Below is a few reasons why we are seeking to update the current Constitution and regulations:

  1. Simplify running the Club and modernising the Constitution so it accommodates contemporary issues.
  2. Over the last five years, surf lifesaving has taken substantial steps towards developing and adopting a “standard model” for surf clubs. The changing social environment in which surf clubs now operate. Issues such as charitable status, service classification, funding eligibility, governance, reporting and commercial viability are drivers in the decision-making process around the direction of surf lifesaving into the future. Surf Lifesaving NSW (SLSNSW), in conjunction with the Department of Fair Trading, has developed a standard constitutional template for use by surf lifesaving clubs. This template was created to respond to changes in the Associations & Incorporations Act (The Act), which governs incorporated entities such as surf lifesaving clubs.
  3. Under The Act, among many other requirements, incorporated entities, such as surf lifesaving clubs, are required to periodically review their constitutions to ensure that they remain current and relevant to their operation.
  4. The changes to The Act, accompanied by the shift towards a standard model for the future, is the catalyst for the review of the Constitution. This review, and subsequent adoption, is the foundation for the Club’s succession planning for the long-term future of Newport SLSC.

Please provide your feedback via email to [email protected] & [email protected]. To assist us in compiling your feedback, please be sure to reference your comments to the rule or clause it covers.

Once your feedback has been compiled, we will review the next steps; however, if no significant changes arise, we will seek to vote on this Constitution in June 2022 (before our next AGM in July 2022).

Thank you for your assistance, and we look forward to your input.
