Spinal Management
Description
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to manage injured casualties with suspected spinal injuries in an aquatic environment and in emergency situations.
Award. Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive the SLSA Spinal Management award.
Course content
- Factors and methods of moving a casualty
- The possible causes of spinal injuries
- Signs and symptoms of a patient with suspected spinal injuries
- The principles of immobilisation for spinal injuries
- Management of head and spinal injuries
- Demonstrate the management of head and spinal injuries
- Detail the precautions necessary for the transportation of casualties with suspected spinal injuries
Entry Requirements
- Participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age on the date of final assessment.
- Participants must hold one of the following units of competency:
- PUAEME001B – Provide Emergency Care
- Participants must meet one of the following SLSA requirements:
- Hold a current SLSA Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
- Hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate (CPR component must have been updated in the last 12 months)
General Information
The duration of the course is approximately 6-8 hours. To ensure your skills and knowledge remain current, re-certification must occur annually from the date of the final assessment.
Assessment
Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
