The 2020 Shannon Eckstein Ironman Classic

The Shannon Eckstein Ironman Classic attracts competitors from all over the country and offers the same format of a traditional surf carnival; a 10-12 minute race combining the four main disciplines of surf life saving into a single race; swimming, board paddling, ski paddling and running.

  • A field of sixteen athletes compete against each other, with the first eight qualifying for the final.
  • This year’s event was held at BMD Northcliffe SLSC on the 14th & 15th of February 2020 (the inaugural event was established in 2019 to mark Shannon’s retirement from the sport).
  • Newport’s, Lizzie Welborn and Emily Doyle secured 2nd and 4th places respectively in the Open Ironwoman, whilst Charlie Brooks teamed up with Maddie Dunn from Northcliff to win the Mixed Board Rescue Event. Well done!

Report by James Brooks, Coach

  • Huge congratulations and thanks to all the crew that raced at Shannon’s iron man classic.
  • Finn Askew, Jackson Borg, Charlie Brooks, Max Brooks, Isaac Smith & Zach Morris all made it through heats into the semis with Max, Jackson & Isaac making it to the final and our others only just missed qualifying.  Waves were massive and unpredictable, who knew Jackson’s ski could fly!
  • Our ladies were absolutely outstanding, Emily Doyle finished a fantastic 4th and was very unlucky not to podium. Lizzie Welborn continued her incredible season with a second place.
  • Unfortunately our under 15s were unable to race due to surf conditions.
  • All attention now moves to State and Aussies.
